The Port of Sheerness

Fresh Produce

As the UK's leading port for fresh produce, the Port of Sheerness has long set the benchmark for the efficient and careful handling of fresh produce.

Sheerness was the first UK port to build a quayside coolstore in 1990 and has since invested in excess of £70 million in first class facilities for fresh produce.

Sheerness has over 50,000 pallet spaces of chilled storage capacity for fresh produce, many within yards of the quay side and is a consolidation point, receiving product from all over the world by road, rail, sea and air.

Able to handle both containerised and conventional cargo, Sheerness can also provide added value activities; from de-palletising, re-packing and bar-coding to box-end labelling, case picking, topping and pallet reconstruction.

Sheerness is the only UK Port to have a dedicated banana ripening centre, which was opened by Chiquita International in 2004. Chiquita import around 100,000 tonnes of bananas through this facility.

The Sheerness Fresh Produce Terminal continues to develop the strategy of a single delivery direct from port to supermarket, reducing unnecessary food miles.
